The GM Tonawanda Engine Plant complex is producing the 2020 Corvette engine, a 6.2-liter small block V8 LT2 that is certified to produce 495 hp and 470 lb-ft of torque.

And it seems as though the approximately 1,500 people at the plant are doing something right because if you look at where the engines they produce go, then it is clear that they’re building the right lineup.

That is, they’re producing the 2.0-liter turbo and 2.5-liter engines that go into the Chevy Camaro, Colorado, Equinox, Traverse, Malibu and Impala; GMC Canyon, Acadia and Terrain; Cadillac ATS and CTS; and the Buick Regal. Take out some of those low-selling sedans, and that’s a lot of engines.

They’re producing the 4.3-liter V6, 5.3-liter V8 and the 6.2-liter V8 engines that go into the Chevy Silverado, Suburban and Tahoe; GMC Yukon/Yukon Denali; and Cadillac Escalade. All of which are doing well, thank you.

And they’re building the 6.6-liter heavy-duty small-block gas V8 for the 2020 Chevy Silverado HD and GMC Sierra HD.

It is worth noting that the Tonawanda complex has been producing engines for a considerable amount of time. Plant #1 opened in 1938, Plant 34 in 1941, and Plant #5 in 2001.

GM has invested some $2.9-billion in the plant during the past decade to keep Tonawanda competitive. Which obviously it is.

  • Cylinder Coating for Improved Performance

Generally, when OEMs produce aluminum engine blocks (aluminum rather than cast iron because cast iron weighs like cast iron), they insert sleeves into the piston bores—cast iron sleeves.
