TOOLHOLDER FOR THREADING A tool-holder from Seco-Carboloy (www.secocarboloy.com; Warren, MI) for its Snap Tap thread turning inserts features an Anti-Twist insert locking system. A solid carbide pin in the back of the insert pocket resists distortion and prevents twisting and turning of the insert during machining. There is a heavy-duty clamp that pulls the insert down and into the pocket. Results: less vibration, and greater accuracy and performance of the insert for improved threading productivity.
IMPROVED TORQUING Simplicity, accuracy and speed are characteristics of torque wrenches from ASI DataMyte (www.asidatamyte.com; Plymouth, MN). The LightStar line wrenches features an LED indicator to indicate whether the achieved torque is good (green) or bad (red), based on results from the wrench’s torque sensor that’s mounted directly on the turning axis, thereby providing accurate readings and insensitivity to point of load. The wrenches feature lightweight, reinforced aluminum allow construction for ease of use and a narrow head design for use in tight locations.
MINDING THE LIGHT. Magna Electronics and Mobileye Vision Technologies have joined forces to develop a combined automatic high beam/low beam headlamp controller and lane departure warning system that can be integrated into a single camera. Mobileye will provide the chipset to control the system, while Magna will provide the camera and automatic headlamp control software for the system, which will debut in 2007.
“SEEING” IN COLOR The ZFV-C is a color version of the Smart Sensor from Omron Electronics (www.omron.com/oei; Schaumburg, IL), which means that it has the ability to “see” images that are invisible to monochromatic sensors, which makes it particularly reliable when inspecting complex targets. As many as five sensors can be connected to one controller bus through a snap-on system; five different inspections can be performed in a single pass. The sensor is priced at $2,300.
WATERJET MEETS EDM Because of its familiarity with electrical discharge machining (EDM) requirements, Mitsubishi MC Machinery Systems (www.mitsubishi-world.com; Wood Dale, IL) has developed a line of waterjet cutting machines specifically for use with EDM machines. That is, the Waterjet line of machines (three models, ranging from 3- to 5-axes) is designed so that roughing and bulk material removal can be performed prior to EDMing, which can reduce machining time by 28% compared with EDM alone.
