Lamborghini recently announced a production “milestone” for its Murciélago, which is built in the company’s factory in Sant’Agata Bolognese. The car in question is a SuperVeloce LP 670-4, a version of the V12 Murciélago. This car produces 670-hp from its 6.5-liter engine.

The weight of the car is reduced by 220 lb., which was accomplished by looking at all aspects of the “base” (c’mon—“base”?) vehicle. The SuperVeloce combines stiff carbon-fiber components and a tubular steel frame that is 44-lb. lighter than the one in the base car yet 12% better in torsional stiffness. There is a carbon-fiber transmission tunnel and floor; they’re attached to the steel frame with rivets and high-strength adhesives. All of the body panels with the exceptions of the roof and the doors, which are steel, are carbon fiber. There are 72.6 lb. taken out of the chassis and exterior, 74.8 lb. from the interior and 72.6 lb. out of the engine and drivetrain.

All of which translates into a power-to-weight ratio of 5.1 lb./hp.

Or, a more telling set of numbers is this: 0 to 62 mph in 3.2 seconds. Top speed: 212 mph.

Oh, and only 350 of these SuperVeloce models are going to be produced.

Now here’s an interesting thing: the LP640 Murciélago was introduced in mid-November 2007.

So the production milestone? They’ve built 4,000 units.

While this might seem like an exceedingly slow pace, know that the Lamborghini Diablo, the previous V12, was in production for 11 years during which time only 2,900 were built. Clearly, they’re on fire at Sant’Agata Bolognese.

By the way: the 4,000th Murciélago has been shipped to a customer in China.
