Labor Day

Labor Day has been celebrated in the U.S. since 1882. Today is Labor Day. It seems somewhat odd that for most people it is a day off of work. Celebrating labor by not working. Go figure.

What some people are doing with their day off is perhaps doing a relaxing bit of gardening, taking advantage of the last few weeks of temperate weather.

Which allows us to give a shout-out to General Motors, which has been helping people throughout the Detroit community create urban gardens.

Shown here are steel crates that are used for tasks like shipping engines to the GM Orion Assembly Plant:

And shown here is what a donation by GM to the community is being used for in Southwest Detroit:

The corporation has donated a total of 350 crates like these (among other things) that are being used by volunteers who grow and donate herbs and vegetables.

In the grand scheme of things, this may not seem like a big deal. But it is certainly a laudable act by the company that calls Detroit its home.

It’s Labor Day. Go outside and relax.
