Ducati’s Superlight Light Superbike

This is the Ducati 1199 Panigale.

This is the Ducati 1199 Panigale. Stripped. Which is a study in lightweight design.

Consider that the overall weight of the bike is a mere 361.5 lb.

The 1,199-cc engine is a stressed member of the chassis. The aluminum monocoque is a die cast aluminum element that attaches to the cylinder heads (the Ducati signature 90-deg. L-twin configuration is used for the heads), then protrudes forward to house the steering head bearings and to form the airbox along the way. There is an aluminum fuel tank. The die cast aluminum, single-sided swing arm is attached to the rear of the engine.

The rear subframe, also attached to the engine, is die cast aluminum. The front subframe, attached to the monocoque frame, is made with magnesium.

All of which help explain the extreme lightness of the 1199 Panigale.
