When the folks at BMW DesignworksUSA aren’t involved in designing things like new X3s, they are designing things like. . .airplane pilot headsets. One of their designs was launched this week at Airventure 2011 in Oshkosh, WI, by its client Sennheiser.

The Sennheiser S1 Digital is a general aviation headset. According to Jörg Buchberger, Sennheiser Business Segment Manager Aviation, “Safety, excellent speech intelligibility and comfort for fatigue-free listening were our top priorities.” He added, “We had a lot of completely new ideas for the headset which we wanted to implement together with an experienced partner. We found the perfect one in BMW Group DesignworksUSA.”

So presumably, not only did they achieve the functionality and comfort they were seeking, but let’s face it: the headset looks cool, too.

Noted Laurenz Schaffer, president of BMW Group DesignworksUSA, “We are designing entire cabin solutions as well as cockpits and equipment which provide an excellent backdrop of knowledge and expertise that also translated into the functional and aesthetic expressions of the S1 Digital headset.”

Last week, the San Francisco Bay Area Rapid Transit authority announced that DesignworksUSA would be designing new trains for the system that are planned to go into operation in 2017.

Yes, we can’t resist: Planes, trains and automobiles.
