Connected, Vibration-dampening Tool Holder

The Sandvik Coromant Silent Tools Plus tool holder helps keep turning tools quiet during machining operations because it has a pre-tuned dampener inside the tool body that consists of a heavy mass supported by rubber spring elements. However, should something go awry during machining, there is digital connectivity between the toolholder and a controller. Data from the machining process is collected and displayed on a dashboard. For example, a vibration indicator function detects issues with machining at an early stage, helping to prevent vibration-associated issues such as noise, poor surface quality and accelerated tool wear. And a center height setting function displays the level of the cutting edge, so that it can be quickly and easily set as needed. The result is better machining performance and longer tool life.

Robust Hardness Tester

Although the Wilson UH4000 series of universal hardness testers works well with small test pieces and in a lab, it is designed with larger pieces and rough production environments in mind. It has a sturdy steel casting frame and an 11.80 × 15.75-inch T-slot stage with high weight capacity for heavy and/or large parts. Vertical stage movement is automatic or else manual via a clutched mechanical handle. A clamping tool is optional. It can test nondestructively in the Rockwell, Vickers, Knoop and Brinell hardness scales, using software designed to make the process easy, repeatable and automatic. The series features a closed-loop loading cycle for accuracy, fast testing cycles and an eight-position turret. The UH4250 model is designed for hardness testing from 0.5 to 250 kilograms of force (kgf); the UH750 is for testing 3–750 kgf.

Mini End Mills

When machining micro-sized mold and die features in steel as hard as 48-65 Rc, it’s hard to maintain precision and surface finish quality, and tool life tends to be short—particularly when the operator can’t see the cutting tool or its point of contact with the workpiece. To address those micro-milling issues, the Seco JM100 Mini solid-carbide end mill series has precise geometries and a tool coating that reduces tool wear and enables smooth, consistent surfaces. Tight radius tolerances of ±0.005 μm on the tool reduce runout virtually to zero, increasing output and contributing to lower cost per part. The JM100 Mini is available in two- and three-flute versions in diameters from 0.2 mm to 3.0 mm (0.008–0.118 inches), corner radii ranging from 0.05 mm to 0.3 mm (0.002–0.012 inches) RE, and overhang lengths from 1.5* DC to 20* DC.

Digital Metrology System

For those who rely on older manual coordinate measuring machines, optical comparators, profile projectors, or measuring microscopes and are not ready to give them up, there’s a retrofit digital readout system (DRO) that can greatly increase the productivity of such machines. The Quadra-Chek 2000 is a DRO that can be used to improve 2D measuring equipment with up to three axes. For complex and repetitive measuring tasks, it can automatically record a measuring program that can then be run on demand. The system keeps track of the presets, sequence of measurements, tolerances, and data-output commands; when the recorded program is again executed, the digital readout displays visual instructions relating to the features to be measured, providing direct and repeatable guidance for the user. All measurement results are graphically displayed on the unit’s high-resolution 7-inch color touchscreen. A measurement report function makes it easy to create a report containing measurement and tolerance results and other information. The report is then exportable as a PDF or CSV file.
