COMPACT ROBOT. The RS40B SCARA robot (that’s as in Selective Compliant Articulated Robot Arm) from Stäubli (www.staubli.com; Duncan, SC) has a load capacity of 2 to 5 kg and a reach of 400 mm. (Other machines in the family can go to 800 mm and an 8-kg payload). The unit is capable of handling material handling, assembly, and packaging operations. The four-axis robot has a PC-based controller.


SEEING THE LED. Valeo (www.valeo.com) is testing a new headlamp system that incorporates both Xenon and LED solutions for improved visibility. The modules rely on Xenon as the main lighting source for high- and low-beam operations, while LEDs are used to provide additional bend lighting and additional illumination for highway driving. The LEDs are also used as the primary source for daytime running lamp and parking lamp functions.


DRIVING VEHICLE DATA. Seagate Technology (www.seagate.com) has developed a hard drive with the ability to store up to 40 Gbytes of data for use in vehicle applications. The EE25 drive can withstand operating temperatures between -30 to 85 degrees C, with the ability to withstand vibration interruptions. The company is currently testing the drive with an undisclosed OEM for use on a variety of infotainment systems, including navigation and diagnostics, with potential availability in a non-U.S. branded vehicle in the next 18 months.


SLIDING DOORS GO DUAL. DURA Automotive Systems, Inc. (www.dura.com) developed a new dual power sliding door system that opens the application of sliding doors onto new vehicle segments. The system, which is being displayed on a Smart Forfour, improves entry and egress on traditional small cars, while reducing the potential for door dings or other damage. DURA engineers also eliminated the need for an exterior track guide by integrating the guide track within the doors themselves.


BORE GAGING—UNPLUGGED. The M1 Wave from Marposs Corp. (www.marposs.com; Auburn Hills, MI) is an electronic bore gage that doesn’t have a cable that can tangle, break or otherwise limit operation. Instead, this unit has the plug gage seated in a handle that contains a Bluetooth transmitter. The gage provides a measuring repeatability of 0.5 microns over a measuring range of 3 to 300 mm. Measurement values are transmitted to a receiver for display and/or storage with just the push of a button.


GET A GRIP. Ansell (www.ansellpro.com; Red Bank, NJ) has developed what it has trademarked as “Grip Technology” for its gloves, a coating that consists of a thin nitrile film with a roughed surface. Coated gloves were tested at the University of Birmingham’s Sensory Motor Neuroscience Lab, where it was found that it requires 34 to 69% less grip force to lift an oily 10-lb. object with the gloves as compared with non Grip Technology gloves. The coating is available on AlphaTEC gloves from Ansell.


PRODUCTION MACHINING. The ANW-3500S from Fuji Machine America (www.fujimachine.com; Vernon Hills, IL) has twin spindles that are each rated at 15/20 hp; an A2-6 spindle nose,; MT4 tailstock; quill stroke of 130 mm; and a work size of 120 x 250 mm. The machine features built in robotic automation for part load/unload. Among the applications the turning machine is suited for are CVTs, CVJs, and outer races.
