The ES8 from Shanghai-based NIO is a seven-seat, fully electric SUV. While it is presently only available in China, that may be a “for-now: situation: the company has a North American headquarters in San Jose, at which there are some 500 employees, and while that operation is apparently focused on developing autonomous driving technologies (it is an autonomous driving permit holder from the California DMV), let’s face it: you need a vehicle to run autonomously, so chances are good its plans call for vehicle availability in the U.S. market at some point.

It is interesting to note the ramp of the ES8. It became available in the China market on June 28. During the three days of that month, NIO delivered 100 vehicles. In July, 381. By August, the number jumped to 1,121 deliveries. In September there were 1,766 deliveries. All of which comes to 3,368 vehicles.

While that overall number isn’t great—especially when you take into account the fact that for August (the most-recent month data was available for) LMC Automotive calculated that the seasonally adjusted annualized rate (SAAR) for the light vehicle market in China was 28.2-million vehicles.

But it is worth noting how there is an ever-upward trajectory to its sales. And it has more vehicles coming. This may be worth paying attention to.
