Although LEDs for headlamps have been, well, desirable but not readily do-able, according to Philips Lumileds, its LUXEON Altilon power LEDs are good to go for forward lighting. Proof: the brightly stunning Audi R8 uses them—for high- and low-beam applications. The new LEDs provide more than 850 lumens and 60 MNits at 1000mA; the 5600K color temperature conforms to ECE and SAE specs. They are compact, have low power requirements, require reduced thermal management engineering, and facilitate assembly for reduced manufacturing costs.

What does this mean? Perhaps a whole lot of very exotic headlamp designs going forward.
