BMW of North America is going to be offering 19 of 20 2011 Frozen Black Edition M3 coupes in the U.S. starting 11:30 am Eastern on Thursday, June 16 (call 800/245-4269).

The cars are identically equipped. They feature a 4.0-liter, 441-hp M V8 and an M Double Clutch Transmission, which facilitates a 0 to 60 mph time of 4.5 seconds. There are M3 19-in. GTS wheels—in black (the brake calipers peeking through are red). Inside, the seats are covered with Novillo leather with red contrast stitching.

The paint is part of the BMW Individual palette. There is a Black Metallic base coat that’s covered with a silk matte clear coat. Consequently, there is a matte finish yet a deep metallic luster.

The MSRP for the Frozen Black Edition M3 is $79,650.

This is clearly an interesting move by BMW, as it is leveraging engineering—not only the car itself, but the finishing process, too—design—as in selecting the color and materials—and manufacturing—remember: this is a limited edition, so this means small-lot production—to create a handful of vehicles that will undoubtedly be in far greater demand than their numbers.
