There is a truism about automotive journalists that even automotive journalists admit is, well, true: They love station wagons, diesels and manual transmissions. Which is pretty much a trifecta of what ordinary people buy.

Be that as it may, the headline for a press release from Audi is rather amusing:

ALL-NEW AUDI RS 6 AVANT IS COMING TO AMERICA!!!

Yes, they used three exclamation points.

The RS Avant doesn’t come with a diesel. Rather, it is powered with a 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8 that produces 592 hp and 590 lb-ft of torque.

It has a standard eight-speed Tiptronic transmission. Not a manual.

But it is a station wagon. Yes, that’s right, a station wagon.

It will be coming to the U.S. in 2020.

Somehow, even the fact that it is being fitted out with the RS performance goods, one only wonders whether Oliver Hoffmann, managing director of Audi Sport GmbH, is right: “We will. . .be offering the RS 6 Avant in North America for the very first time. As such, we will be tapping into a new market with huge potential and generating further growth.”

“Huge potential”?

Well, outside of automotive journalists. . . .
