One of the features that seems to be gaining in popularity in vehicles of all types and sizes is the “panoramic” sunroof. Not just a cutout that is generally located above the front seat and a bit over the legroom in the back, the panoramic model allows all passengers—even those in the third row of some SUVs—to have sun exposure while on the road.

What you may not know is that there is the potential that passengers might be propelled out of said opening should there be a rollover accident.

So Hyundai Mobis, which has been producing airbags since 2002, has developed what it says is the world’s first airbag system for panoramic sunroofs.

The airbag is installed inside the sunroof. It is deployed forward from the rear of the car once a sensor has detected that the turning angle of the vehicle is that of a rollover condition. The inflation of the bag is complete in 0.08 seconds.

Needless to say it is necessary to engineer the sunroof system in order to accommodate the airbag. And the airbag system needs to be capable of determining whether the panoramic roof is opened or closed during the rollover event.

Hyundai Mobis has completed the road and reliability tests on the airbag and says that it is ready to go into mass production with it.
