Tata is working to expand the reach of its highly economical Nano vehicle (and for those who are interested in reading about the development of that car, we suggest you check this story from our sister publication, Time Compression) by using it as the basis for a concept car.

Its called the “Pixel.”

T

The Tata Pixel is a city car, which is capable of “comfortably accommodating four adults,” which is probably a completely relative description of interior comfort.

T

This is no econoshoebox, however, as it features Tata’s “Zero Turn” toroidal traction-drive infinitely variable transmission which helps assist the rotation of the outward rear wheel forward and the rear inner wheel backward when the front wheels are positioned at an acute angle. . .meaning that when someone is trying to parallel park into a space that is probably too close to the car’s just over three-meter length (the Nano is 3,099-mm long), the ability to have a turning circle radius of 2.6 m is probably a helpful thing for the Pixel as well as the cars fore and aft.

T

And if its side-by-side parking, then the scissor doors help minimize door dings (on adjacent doors).

The vehicle is powered by a 1.2-liter diesel that’s positioned at the rear of the car and is said to have a fuel economy of 3.4 l/100 km (a.k.a., 69 mpg).
