Compact Turning Center Offers Single Setup Machining

Important to note: This compact, high-speed turning center features milling and drilling capabilities of the Y-axis, thus eliminating the need for secondary machining operations. The Y-axis increases the number of workpieces that can be completely machined without expensive custom rotary tool holders and enables the milling cutter to machine above or below centerline. Because the machine can eliminate the need for secondary operations on another machine, like a milling machine, there are predictable throughput and consistent part quality.   
Pertinent data: Depending on the model, the bar capacity is 2 or 2.628 in., and the chuck size 6.5 or 8 in. The X, Y and Z travels are 8.07, 4.13 and 22 in.; the rapid traverse rates are 1,181, 394 and 1,417 ipm. The machine is equipped with a 20-hp AC motor spindle. There are 12 turret stations for BMT 45-type toolholders, and 24 index positions. A 1.25-in. boring bar can be accommodated. The sub spindle, positioned by a ball screw and servo motor, enables the complete machining of parts in a single setup. 


Mitsui Seiki Expands Vertex 550-5X Series

Important to note: Vertex 55X II is a series of six vertical machining centers that consists of several configurations based on table sizes and types, ranging in dimension from 9- to 15-in. in diameter. Rotary axis drive systems are high-torque geared or direct-drive. An enhanced ultra-high accuracy package suitable for tight-tolerance mold and die work and other precision component applications is available. The machine features a cast-iron bed for rigidity and thermal stability; guideway mounting surfaces are hand-scraped for volumetric accuracies. Automation systems are also available for on-machine inspection. 
Pertinent data: A new 30,000 rpm spindle joins 15,000 and 25,000 rpm options. The HSK-80 taper spindle connection for heavy-duty machining is available to compliment the HSK-63 and 40-taper tool interfaces. Positioning accuracy in X,Y,Z axes is 0.000040 in. while the A-axis is ±6 arc seconds and the C-axis is ±4 arc seconds. X,Y,Z strokes are 21.7 x 23.6 x 19.7 in.

What: Feeler FT-250SY CNC Turning Center

Important to note: The Feeler FT-250SY features a Y-axis with 3.9-in. (±1.9 in.) travel, and an 8 in. chuck diameter sub-spindle (20 hp, 4,500 rpm) in addition to the primary 10 in. chuck diameter spindle (30 hp, 3,500 rpm) to provide more capacity benefits. The single-piece structure with boxways, a 45° slant bed and robust base provides the vibration dampening needed when turning hard materials, including interrupted cutting. 
Pertinent data: The FT-250SY has an X, Y, Z travels of 8.2, 41.3 and 3.9 in. There 
is a heavy-duty, 12-station turret. The BMT-65 tool system features a solid interface for tool holding. The machine comes standard with a Fanuc 31i-TB CNC control. 
A fully enclosed CE cabinet prevents dust and fumes from entering the machine thus maximizing machine component longevity.

Important to note: The AU-1440iA Z800 is engineered to process both large and small parts with wire EDM. Its AccuteX automatic wire threading system offers fast submerged rethreading at the break point (dielectric drainage/refilling isn’t required) resulting in spark-to-spark times as low as 15 seconds. It features a highly-ribbed column mounted with oversized U, V, Z axes, a reinforced lower arm and a Meehanite case honeycomb-type base. The 5.9-in. U and V axes are protected in a cabinet above the working area. 
Pertinent data: The AU-1440iA Z800 offers an X axis capacity of 55.11-in. and a 31.49-in. capacity in Y and Z enabling it to handle workpieces up to 68.5 x 42.5 x 31.29-in. It can machine workpieces as heavy as 16,440 lb. The rigid structure of the machine and C1 Class U-V ball screws (20 mm) provide the ability to handle the high flushing presses needed for high-speed cutting. A 64-bit Windows CE-based PC CNC system drives machine axes via closed-loop, direct-coupled AC servomotors. The patented structure of the Hiwin linear guideways reduces up to 90% of friction and vibration to provide a positioning accuracy of ±0.00012 in. and repeatability of ±0.00008 in. in X and Y.


Honing Machine for Medium and High Volumes

Important to note: The Sunnen SH-2000 job-shop honing machine offers digital control of spindle speed, power-stroke speed and extra strokes for bore sizing and finishing. The machine is designed to handle a wide variety of parts with bore diameters from 1.5 to 200 mm in medium- to high-production volumes. The machine is equipped with a Siemens PLC/HMI for quick part programming changeover. It also allows operators to adjust speeds during the honing process should it be necessary. Applications include multiple land and tandem bores, heavy or odd-shaped parts, keyways/splines, blind-end bores and thinwall parts. It is suitable for parts with bore diameters from 1.5 to 102 mm in power stroke mode. 
Pertinent data: A 2.25 kW spindle drive delivers 200 to 3,000 rpm while the stroker drive produces rates of 60 to 350 SPM (stroke lengths 6.8 to 170 mm). A universal honing fixture is said to handle “nine out of ten” parts without additional tooling. Options include automatic size control (ASC) gimbal fixtures, long support bars, spindle adapter and an upgraded 32-gallon coolant system. 


 

Turning Insert Grades for Steel

What: Three new grades for turning steel (TP2501, TP1501 and TP0501)

Important to note: Seco’s three new CVD turning insert grades are for machining steel alloys, cast irons and stainless steels. These inserts allow manufacturers to maintain tool life in applications requiring higher or lower speeds. They utilize Edge Intelligence, a detection technology that helps identify used edges that show through the inserts chrome-colored coating via black aluminum oxide. These high-contrast edge marks will not impact tool performance or cutting data.
Pertinent data: Duratomic TP2501, TP1501 and TP0501 are available in a wide range of insert sizes and geometries for roughing to finishing operations. TP2501 is suitable for general steel turning, continuous or interrupted cuts. It can be run with or without coolant. TP1501 is a higher-hardness grade with maximized edge toughness for high wear resistance in low-alloy steel workpieces; it can also be used to machine ductile cast irons. TP0501 is for high-alloy steels and dry cutting.
