TRW Radar Helps Put a Stop to Collisions

Although car radar systems are generally associated with (1) luxury cars and (2) adaptive cruise control systems, TRW Automotive has unveiled today something notably different. Explains Dr. Alois Seewald, director of engineering for integrated active and passive safety technologies at the company, “Radar has, until now, been regarded as a luxury option, but TRW’s AC100 24-GHz product is roughly half the price of 77-GHz radar, brining the benefits of advanced safety, such as Collision Mitigation Braking for city driving, to a wider vehicle market.”

The Collision Mitigation Braking (CMB) he’s referring to is a system that uses a radar sensor to measure the distance of and relative speed to objects in front of a vehicle. It is engineered for use in city driving and traffic jams such that it can handle situations where there are closely packed vehicle moving at slow speeds.

In operation, if the system determines that there is a potential collision with the vehicle ahead, then there is an alert—it can be audible, visual or haptic—to warn the driver. If the driver still seems preoccupied, doesn’t apply the brake, and the vehicle is still closing on the target, the system automatically provides maximum brake boost to slow the vehicle.

The operating distance is on the order of 20 to 23 ft and the speed the vehicle is operating is at is 12.4 mph (i.e., if the vehicle is below 12.4 mph, then the system works to help stop it before a collision, if the vehicle is going faster, then it works to mitigate the severity of the collision): remember, this system is to help when people are in congested conditions..

It should be noted that the 24-GHz radar has a range of up to 492 ft, so it can be used for adaptive cruise control, as well.

But the CMB system shows a certain democratization of safety tech: “We strongly believe that everyone deserves the best possible safety solutions and are working with our customer to make this vision a reality,” says Seewald.
