Quick: What car company do you think is the biggest manufacturer in the United Kingdom?

If you’re like me, you’re probably wrong.

It’s Nissan.

It operates a plant in Sunderland, which celebrated its 25th anniversary, and which set a production record in 2011.

It produced 480,485 vehicles—Qashqais, Qashqai+2s, Jukes, and Notes. The demand for the first two was such that they ran 24-hour shifts in the plant.

The 480,485 bested 2010’s 423,262, which is a notable achievement in itself, as it is said to be the first time any car plant in the UK produced more than 400,000 units.

Next year it is going to be adding the Nissan LEAF to the lineup.

Who would have thought Nissan?
