One of These Days. . . The Future

"Electric vehicles have enormous potential for creating a cleaner transport system to help the UK meet its 2050 carbon reduction targets. However, there is uncertainty over the pace of vehicle development, consumer take up and patterns of usage and charging. It is important we anticipate the likely requirements these developments will have for grid enhancement and the need for an intelligent architecture," said Jon Bentley, Energy & Environment Partner, IBM Global Business Services.

Bentley was speaking on the occasion of the launch of a study that it is conducting for the British Energy Technologies Institute along with companies including EDF Energy, E.ON, and Imperial Consultants.

They’re looking at such things as the effect of recharging on the distribution networks in the UK and what’s needed to facilitate a smarter grid to support electric vehicles.

While this is certainly laudable, 2050?

Won’t we have Twinkie-powered flying cars by then?
