Mercedes ________ Voted “________ of the Decade” in Great Britain

Perhaps it is our U.S. bias showing, but when we see the word “Mercedes” associated with winning a vehicular award of some note, our default thinking goes along the lines that it must be something that starts with a letter and ends with the word “Class.” Like, for example, “Mercedes E-Class Voted. . .” and it has been voted: EClass Awards to April 2010 (selection) Award Organiser Our Car Regional weekly newspapers in the newly formed German states Yellow Angel ADACmotorwelt Auto Bild Design Award 2009 Auto Bild Best Car of the Year auto motor und sport Auto Trophy 2009 Auto Zeitung Internet Auto Award (Germany) www.autoscout24.de Sports Car of the Year Auto Bild Sportscars Top-Auto 2010 Motor information service EuroCarBody Award 2009 Automotive Circle International Austria's "Car of the Year" award Austrian car, motoring and cycling association Diners Club Magazine Award Diners Club GOOD DESIGN® Award Chicago Athenaeum Autocar Road Test Award Autocar (India) Continental Irish luxury/sports car of the year Irish Motoring Writers Association Best Car of the Year Otohaber (Turkey) But this one struck us as somewhat unusual: Actros voted “Truck of the Decade” in Great Britain Actros?

But this one struck us as somewhat unusual:

Actros voted “Truck of the Decade” in Great Britain

Actros? Isn’t he one of the Three Musketeers?

Turns out that the readers of Truck & Driver magazine voted for the best truck from a list that includes models from MAN, Daf, Iveco, and Scania, and the Mercedes came out on top.

A

The truck was introduced in 1996 and is presently in its third generation. Approximately 65,000 have been built. The truck is manufactured in the Daimler assembly plant in Wörth. The truck is available with features including a distance control system that automatically maintains a preset distance between it and a vehicle in front and active braking that automatically kicks in if there is “acute danger of a rear-end collision.”

While we may think “Mercedes” and “car” in the U.S. (although it should be noted that Daimler owns Freightliner, Western Star, Detroit Diesel, and Thomas Built Buses), in Europe the company is very serious when it comes to its commercial trucks. Recently they held a test between the performances of drivers piloting both a contemporary Actros semitrailer/tractor combo with a LP 1620 truck built in 1964. Drivers participating in the tests wore hats fitted with 16 sensors that could record their brain waves via electro-encephalography (EEG). As you might expect, the driver of the modern truck showed less stress than the one behind the wheel of the vintage hauler.
