Lotus: Drive It. Wear It.

Who among us wouldn’t like to own a Lotus?

Who among us wouldn’t like to own a Lotus? Like, say, the Evora. This mid-engined 2+2 is powered by a Lotus-tuned V6 that provides 276 hp @ 6,400 rpm and which, thanks to its low mass (3,040 lb.), goes from 0 to 60 in 4.9 seconds. And the car is designed to accommodate full-sized people in its front seats, to boot, which is certainly advantageous for a car so lithe.

However, while many of us might like to have one, there are a couple of issues that, perhaps, stand in our way. For one thing, the car is hand-crafted and built on a line in Lotus’s plant in Hethel, England. Consequently, its annual production rate is on the order of 2,000 vehicles. So they are, all things considered, comparatively rare.

Second, the Evora costs some $74,000, which puts it out of the league of most people we know.

So while you may not be able to drive a Lotus, next month you will be able to wear one. The company is launching “Lotus Originals” on February 23, 2011, during London Fashion Week’s Menswear Day. You will be able to get everything from leather jackets to luggage, from sweaters (or “jumpers,” as they are known in the U.K.) to cigar cases. And while the focus is on menswear, there are also offerings for women who evidently appear as though they’ve come straight from the runway or the paddock of an F1 race.
