Hard on the heels of Kia Motors America’s announcement that May, 2011 was its best-ever sales month, with 48,212 units moved—a 53.4% increase compared with May 2010—Kia Motors Manufacturing Georgia (KMMG) announced that it is undertaking the expansion of its $1-billion manufacturing complex in West Point, Georgia. 2011 Kia Sorento The plant, which launched in November 2009, and is where the Sorento CUV is manufactured (it has been Kia’s best-selling vehicle for the past 17 months), will be joined in September by the Optima, its midsize sedan. 2011 Kia Optima They’re spending an additional $100-million in the KMMG facility, which includes: · A second 5,400-ton transfer press · More welding robots · An increase in the size of the paint shop · Extending the production line · Expanding a railroad spur · Adding more than 500 parking spaces (they’ve just hired some 1,000 more people to accommodate a third shift starting later this month, brining the employment at the plant to more than 3,000) Kia Motor Manufacturing Georgia When the plant is at full capacity, it will be able to produce 360,000 vehicles per year.
