While the proliferation of electric vehicles (EVs) may not be the best thing in the world for manufacturers of internal combustion engines, there is a bright spot for some companies, according to IMS Research. The research firm, which forecasts that the demand for EVs will rise from fewer than 600,000 in 2008 to over 12-million in 2020, has determined that semiconductor manufacturers will realize a big boon, primarily predicated on the power device use in EVs, with items from the power inverter, battery monitoring and control, DC/DC converters, AC/DC charger, and air conditioning converters all requiring semiconductor tech.
