General Motors announced his morning that it plans to spend $47-million for tooling and equipment at its Defiance, Ohio, powertrain plant to boost capacity for component production for the Ecotec 1.4-liter engine.

The engine is used in the Chevrolet Cruze and Volt, and will be put in the forthcoming Sonic small car.

Here’s an interesting aspect of this announcement: the facility underwent an upgrade in 2010 to produce parts for the 1.4-liter engine.

With the accelerating demand for small, fuel-efficient engines, here it is, a year later, and they need more parts.
