Don’t Cha Wish Your SUV Was Green Like This?

Although some might think that we’re being TMZ-like by running this picture of Pussycat Doll and “Dancing with the Stars” contestant Nicole Scherzinger as a cheap ploy to generate traffic, it is actually an acknowledgement of Earth Day.

Huh?

You see, Ms. Scherzinger is pumping diesel fuel into her Mercedes GL350 BlueTEC. This seven-passenger SUV’s 210-hp V6 engine provides the kind of torque that could be expected from a V8—400 lb-ft—yet has fuel efficiency numbers that are not uncharacteristic of some four-cylinder engines: 23 mpg highway. The vehicle features the BlueTEC system that includes an oxidation catalyst, particulate filter, and a NOx storage converter with an SCR catalytic converter and urea injection.

The upshot of this system is that the diesel-powered SUV, which is manufactured at the $600-million Mercedes-Benz plant in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, meets the emissions regulations of all 50 states. So comparatively speaking, she rolls large and green.
