Copper Could Be the Choice for EV Motors

As the Canadian government has announced that it will stop producing pennies this fall, that copper has to go somewhere, right? According to the Copper Alliance, one excellent use of copper is for electric vehicles.

Specifically: the copper rotor induction motor.

This would be used instead of permanent magnet motors. One key reason is that those motors require rare earth metals. Those materials have had skyrocketing price increases during the past two years.

So there is the copper motor alternative, one that is currently being used by companies including Remy International, Fukuta Electric & Machinery, and AC Propulsion.

The Copper Alliance has put out a video showing what these companies are doing with copper.

According to the Alliance, copper rotors don’t have a drag loss due to reluctance while running and they are efficient during high-speed and low-torque conditions. The copper die casting process has been perfected during the past 10 years. And the auto industry is no stranger to copper, as the average car produced in North America has 50 to 55 lb. of copper.
