Bravo Fiat!

You’ve got to believe that the members of the Club Fiat-Lancia Unlimited were, until last year’s integration of Fiat with Chrysler, pretty much like members of the Thomas Pynchon Fan Club waiting for a book signing at a suburban Barnes & Noble.

You’ve got to believe that the members of the Club Fiat-Lancia Unlimited were, until last year’s integration of Fiat with Chrysler, pretty much like members of the Thomas Pynchon Fan Club waiting for a book signing at a suburban Barnes & Noble.

But their patience after nearly 30 years has paid off because during their annual meeting in Asheville, NC, last week, the head of Fiat North America, Laura Soave, showed up at their closing dinner and made an announcement that probably had a few people choking with surprise on their cannolo: They were being giving the opportunity to get their names on the reservation list for the Fiat Cinquecento “Prima Edizione” model.

Just 500 of these Fiat 500s will be built, and the club members who sign up also get the opportunity to select the build number. The cars will be available in three colors: Bianco, Rosso and Grigio, and will be equipped with manual transmissions and a 1.4-liter MultiAir four.

Didn’t make the event? Check out the Fiat fan site, www.ciaofiat.com, which will open for reservations at some future date.
