The Audi plant in Ingolstadt manufactures the A4 Sedan, A4 Avant, A4 allroad quattro, A3, A3 Sportback, A5 Coupe, A5 Sportback, and Q5. Which means that the plant, despite the fact that they’ve made great strides in more-efficient manufacturing, is reaching its limits. But there is another limiting factor, which is the space to expand.

So Audi has purchased 40 hectares, or 99 acres, in Münchsmüster, which is 24 km, or 15 miles, away from Ingolstadt.

No, this is not a Christo wrap of German terrain; it indicates the site that Audi is building its new facilities on

The company is going to be putting a variety of operations on the 27 hectares it is originally developing. Included are a press shop including transfer presses and equipment for processing press-hardened body parts, a machining line for chassis components, and an aluminum die casting foundry.

On the subject of the foundry, Frank Dreves, Audi Production Board member, said, “Die-cast components are a central element of our lightweight construction strategy. Having our own die-cast foundry will enable us to advance the necessary technology and guarantee the long-term supply of die-cast aluminum parts.”

The facilities are to come on line in 2013.
