If you are reading this on Monday, January 13, then know that today is the first media day of the North American International Auto Show in Detroit.
Depending on what time of day it is, there is news breaking about the North American Car and Truck of the Year Awards, Ford, Toyota, Chrysler, Chevrolet, Mercedes-Benz and smart, BMW, Porsche, Volkswagen, Audi, Mini, Bentley, Honda, Kia, Nissan, Hyundai, and Volvo, in that order.
Here are the 2015 BMW M3 Sedan (top) and the 2015 BMW M4 Coupe (bottom). These, too, are making their debuts in Detroit. Both cars have an all-new turbocharged inline six that produces 425 horsepower and 406 lb-ft of torque. When equipped with a M-DCT transmission, it is 0 to 60 in 3.9 seconds. BMW and some other companies actually admit in advance what they’ll be showing, figuring that they’ll get more coverage that way. Seems to have worked here for BMW, because while we would like to show you pictures of the [deleted], [deleted] or the [deleted], we don’t want to break the embargo.
And here’s the refreshed 2015 Audi A8 that will be debuted. In the front there are new LED headlamps (remember that Audi is the company that started the whole LED headlamp phenomenon), new front fascia, and creases in the hood. Around back there are new designs for both the tail lamps and the tailpipe.
Last Thursday night, John McElroy of Autoline, Scott Burgess of Motor Trend, Mark Phelan of the Detroit Free Press, and I sat down and talked about some of the cars and trucks that are anticipated to be introduced in Detroit. While we saw some of them ahead of today and were sworn to secrecy not to reveal details—Burgess suggested that we might not even be able to acknowledge their existence, which is pretty much an existential question, given that some of those vehicles are Googleable—there is some informed speculation.
In addition to the Detroit Show, a variety of other automotive-related subjects were discussed, from 2013 sales to the announcement by Alan Mulally that he plans to stick around at Ford.
