BMW AG says its new i3 electric car will debut in the U.S. at a starting price of $42,300 in the second quarter of 2014.

The company has not yet revealed the price of an optional gasoline-powered on-board generator that can double the i3’s 80-100-mile range. Earlier media reports speculated the system could cost $4,000.
The 2,800-lb car features an aluminum chassis and the industry’s first high-volume carbon-fiber-reinforced plastic body. The car is shorter than a BMW 3 Series sedan but provides about the same interior room, according to the company.
BMW will publicly introduce the i3 next Monday at simultaneous unveilings in Beijing, London and New York City. The car was shown in preproduction form last November at the Los Angeles auto show.
