Ultracold Mill

Chances are if you work in or have gone through a machining facility, you know that cutting tools can get ultrahot. This is something that you probably haven’t seen, however, which is a mill that is ultracold. Specifically, it is a cryogenically cooled tool. According to 5ME (5ME.com), which has developed the process, the use of the tool can result in a five-fold increase when finishing compacted graphic iron (CGI) components. CGI is finding increased use in powertrain applications. In addition to the increase in production, it allows the elimination of mist collection and waste coolant collection, as the characteristics of the cold tool mean that coolant isn’t required.
