The old saying “Where the rubber meets the road” may have to be modified at some point in the not-too-distant future to “Where the carbon fiber meets the road.” That’s because Goodyear is deploying a carbon fiber-based insert in the outboard sidewall of its Eagle tires with ResponseEdge Technology. The reason: improved stiffness for better handling and steering precision with less mass. What’s more, the tires also use Kevlar in a sound- and shock-absorbing mat (“InsuLayer”) to improve tread wear. “A high-performance tire with carbon fiber and Kevlar offers consumers relevant technologies that enhance the total driving experience,” said Bob Toth, Goodyear’s marketing manager for auto tires. So far, the tires are available for aftermarket application only. No OEM contracts have been signed yet.
