The BorgWarner EGR cooler features what’s called “integrated hybrid tube technology” for low-pressure EGR systems.
BorgWarner (borgwarner.com) has developed an exhast gas recirculation (EGR) cooler that’s being used on the 1.6-liter diesel-equipped Renault Scénic and Mégane, and the Nissan Qashqai crossover (remember: the Renault-Nissan Alliance). The EGR cooler helps contribute to a fuel economy improvement of up to 3%. Importantly, it also aids achieving the upcoming Euro 6 emissions standards.
The 130-PS (a.k.a., 128-hp) engine features a low-pressure, compact EGR system. While low-pressure EGR systems are beneficial as regards emissions and fuel economy as compared with high-pressure systems, there are a couple of issues that the low-pressure systems must contend with, including extreme loads and particles.
Inside the cooler are highly corrosion-resistant stainless steel hybrid tubes. The tubes are designed with a specific shape that helps move the gases quickly to help reduce temperature while avoiding soot and hydrocarbon build up. Additionally, there is an integrated hydroformed EGR tube that guides exhaust gases into the cooler and a metallic EGR filter that helps trap any remaining particulates, thereby protecting the turbocharger compressor wheel.
