Environmental and process improvements have been made for steering wheel production by Autoliv, a supplier of interior products ranging from airbags to seatbelts. It is a thermoplastic covering that replaces the more conventional polyurethane material. The thermoplastic is injection molded over the magnesium or steel structure. Not only is the injection molding process faster than the hardening required for the polyurethane, but the gate is smaller, so that the need for deburring is eliminated. What’s more, the thermoplastic is recyclable. The first application is on the 2009 Renault Mégane.
