Although you have undoubtedly seen as many pictures as you could possibly want of the forthcoming 2015 Ford Mustang (and we’re including our obligatory shot here, too), what there has been less attention to is what can be found under the hood.
One of the more surprising things is a 2.3-liter EcoBoost engine. 2.3 liter? Even Scott Makowski, EcoBoost powertrain engineering manager admitted, “This EcoBoost engine might be small in displacement”—yes—“but it delivers where a Mustang driver expects it with a broad, flat torque curve and great drivability under any conditions.” It provides output of an estimated 305 hp and 300 lb-ft of torque.
The 2.3 features direct fuel injection, twin independent variable camshaft timing, and turbocharging. It is the first Ford engine with a low-inertia, twin-scroll turbocharger. The cylinder head has an integrated exhaust manifold that separates the inner and outer pairs of cylinders into each inlet passage to the turbo. This arrangement keeps the exhaust pulses separated from the next cylinder in the firing order so that there aren’t any mixing losses and there is maximized pulse energy to the turbine wheel, which means quicker torque delivery, similar to a twin-turbocharger setup. (Note: this is a twin-scroll turbocharger, not a pair of turbochargers.) In addition to the performance benefit (this is, after all, an engine for a Mustang), there is a gain in fuel efficiency, too (this is, after all, the Age of Fuel Economy): because the exhaust valves are separated, they can stay open longer, which means reduced pumping losses, which can improve specific fuel consumption by approximately 1%.
Other features of the 2.3-liter four are a forged-steel crankshaft, piston-cooling jets, steel piston ring carriers, premium bearing and valve seat materials, forged-steel connecting rods, high-pressure die-cast aluminum cylinder block, and a deep-sump die-cast aluminum oil pan.
Yes, there is also a 5.0-liter V8 for the 2015 Mustang that will produce more than 420 hp and 390 lb-ft of torque. This is, after all, a Mustang.
